A patient portal and referral flow for an allied health network

Nine clinics, a shared waitlist and a referral process that ran on fax and goodwill. We built the portal, kept the clinical system, and put privacy obligations in the foundations.

01The work

What actually happened

The client is not named here at their request. If a reference would help you decide, ask on the call — several are happy to take one.

The network had a practice management system it was not going to replace and did not need to. What it lacked was everything around the edges: patients could not book or complete forms themselves, referrals between clinics moved by paper, and the shared waitlist was a spreadsheet that one person maintained.

We built alongside the clinical system rather than over it. Patients book, complete intake forms and receive results through a portal; the clinical record stays where the clinicians already work. Access logging and consent were designed in from the schema up, because retrofitting an audit trail into a health system is not a thing that can be done credibly.

Hosting was a procurement condition rather than a preference. Everything sits in an Australian region with the data flows documented well enough for the network's privacy officer to sign off without a follow-up meeting.
